INTERVIEW: ITAL TALKS FASHION
Interview by Johanna Valdés.
Photos shot by Bobby Doherty in Daniel Martin-McCormick’s
loft in Brooklyn.
Since the audience - or rather, their clothes - at one of Ital’s shows inspired us to make the Fashion Issue, we thought it was a good idea to spend some time with Daniel Martin-McCormick to chat about fashion. Turns out he used to wear the same shirt for six months on end. The chic, the dirty and the absolutely necessary with Ital.

PHOTOSHOOT THE MEN
Brooklyn’s The Men are as virile and no-frills as their name implies, playing hardcore post-punk that’s melodic, distorted and extremely loud. One night, after a show in New York, photographer Christopher Schreck went running up and down the streets with them and took some photos while they were climbing on window grating, jumping into garbage piles, lifting each other up and grabbing people on the street. He tried capturing it all using some double-exposure and thinks the shots reflect the band’s overall tone. We think so too.

INTERVIEW ICE AGE
Interview by Brenda Bosma. Images found on iceagecopenhagen.blogspot.com
The Danish youngsters from blog buzz band Iceage are hailed as the saviours of punk. With their debut album New Brigade being economically short and their live shows notorious for being fiercely energetic (frontman Elias often sings with bloodied gums), you’ll never know what just hit you. We phoned Elias (19) in his hometown Copenhagen and learned that he has a pretty down-to-earth composure.
‘I don’t think you should really believe anything you read about yourself.’

WHO LET THE BLOGS OUT?
By Carly Blair. With insights from Mike Sniper (Captured Tracks), Amanda Brown (100% Silk), Derek Evers (Impose Magazine), and Justin Gage (Aquarium Drunkard) Illustrations by Geoff Kim
When it comes to music, mp3 blogs help us navigate the internet's unfathomable depths. But where everyone has an opinion, whose do you trust? There's no dying that the internet is a useful tool for finding new music. But if we have to consume information faster and more efficiently to avoid drowning in a sea of information, do we put ourselves at risk only skimming the surface of things? We ask online music experts for their take on the situation.

INTERVIEW HIGH PLACES
Skype interview by Zofia Ciechowska. Photos by Ye Rin Mok
We had a little chat with the pixelated online faces of Rob Barber and Mary Pearson of High Places. We talked about rattlesnakes and worldwideweb stuff, and then our webcams froze and we resorted to emoticons. Online dating’s finest moment.

INTERVIEW MARIA MINERVA
Questions emailed by Bas Morsch. Photos by Nuno Barroso
Estonian dreamgaze girl Maria Juur aka Maria Minerva is the perfect product of the modern-day music industry. Maria is riding the musical wave of the progressive retro generation, who crystallise information overload into reverb-drenched, nostalgic and personal documents of time and sentiment. Crucial instrument... a Macbook. Or is it?

INTERVIEW PEAKING LIGHTS
Words by Johanna Valdés. Photos by Christopher Schreck
Peaking Lights build luscious layers of synths over a super bass to create a dispersed, polyphonic experience. But Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis don’t just make beautiful experimental electro. They’ve made a pretty baby called Mikko too! Indra and Aaron are a family and a self-made business. We met them at Co-op 87, a tiny record store in Brooklyn run by their new label, Mexican Summer. While Aaron loaded the van with their equipment, drove to the venue and set up for the evening’s show, Indra took care of the baby and talked to us about their sonic evolution, recording in New York and how their new family works. A day in the life—away from the bustle of the blogosphere.

INTERVIEW SUUNS
Interview by Brenda Bosma. Photos by Christopher Schreck
We called Suuns synth maestro Max while he was sitting in the back seat of a car headed to a show. We talked quite openly about intimacy. Did you know there were at least five types of intimacy? Of course, the anecdote about groupies was the most revealing, sobering even. The thing about the Mars bar was also pretty honest. Go see them live and don’t be afraid to get intimate. You know there are at least five types of intimacy, right?

INTERVIEW WISE BLOOD
Words by Brenda Bosma. Photos by Jason Crowley
The Pittsburgh cut-’n’-paste wizard Chris Laufman aka Wise Blood seems to fill the web with his tracks incessantly. Be sure to get a physical copy of his latest EP These Wings though. There’s talk about his grand ambition to take over the world of pop. We chatted with him about, well, death, mostly. Turns out he’s slightly changed his plans towards the domination goal. ‘What are you gonna do tomorrow, Chris?’ - ‘Same as I do most of the time’ – ‘Try and take over the world?’ – ‘Just gonna work, I guess.’ But just maybe that’s the best way to someday own some ‘Penthouse Suites’.
