Like their Captured Track labelmates Widowspeak, this Portland dream pop trio feature some pretty seductively narcotic female vocals. However, Blouse’s music is more somber and ’80s synth-focused, like a bummed out, female-fronted Craft Spells. While their collection of influences has been quite fashionable this past year or two, their catchy melodies and Charlie Hilton’s beautifully melancholic delivery set them apart from the crowd. This Denver-based duo, founded by best pals Craig and Andy, make danceable avant-pop music. While they’ve definitely got some Animal Collective vocal influences, their blissful, pounding drum (machine) beats call more to mind the visceral thrill of Sleigh Bells, and when singer Andy R isn’t bellowing, I’m reminded of the Dismemberment Plan’s Travis Morrison’s deadpan delivery. Throw in guitars that range from shoegaze to post-punk, and you’ve got one energetic and enjoyable hodgepodge.

On the Water, the latest from this Baltimore synth pop trio, was (perhaps not surprisingly) recorded at the seaside. Waterfront life is present throughout the album, from field recordings to the tempo, which has mostly slowed down to match the ocean’s tranquil rhythm. While mellower than the songs on 2010’s excellent In Evening Air, their new ones have all the romance, throbbing rhythms, addictive melodies and stirring vocals needed to impress in their own right, and these guys’ live shows haven’t let us down yet.

Manchester’s WU LYF (World Unite/Lucifer Youth Foundation) gained an early burst of hype and curiosity from bloggers on the basis of their anti-establishment branding/aesthetic and reputation for mysteriousness. Luckily, these ‘four dumb kids’ play heavy pop that’s substantial enough to withstand the scrutiny. Their 2011 debut Go Tell Fire on the Mountain is thunderous, haunting, wistful, roughly hewn and beautiful. Ellery Roberts' howled vocals and their mantra-like sing-alongs feel like a call to arms: come answer their battle cry in the pit that’s sure to result.

Dirty Beaches is the one-man lo-fi rockabilly project by Alex Zhang Hungtai. He’s cited David Lynch films such as Lost Highway and Blue Velvet as major influences on his aesthetic. Correspondingly, themes of being on the road and on the run and of the ’50s suburban idyll being a mere sugar coating for a deeply ugly underlying reality are reflected in how Hungtai buries his Elvis-like yelps and croons and occasionally very romantic melodies under layers of no-wavey distortion and reverb.

This historically reclusive Canadian songwriter/producer/illustrator produced Women’s final album Public Strain. The experience was so enjoyable, it lured him out of the hermetic comforts of his basement studio into a larger recording space to record last year’s idiosyncratic pop gem Diaper Island. Though he’s still written, performed and produced everything on the record himself, his new material is less insular and more rollicking and confident-sounding than ever.
