VERONICA FALLS

The name may conjure visions of Californian emo punk and rich kids whining but Veronica Falls is in fact a brooding London-based quartet playing lo-fi art pop that harks back to the early ‘80s in northern England before blending in elements of classic Scottish tweepop (where the band originally came from). Whether you’re coming to them as a fan of The Pastels or a follower of the Vivian Girls, pretty harmonies emerge from the ramshackle noise to make you swoon.

Women’s self-titled post punk debut in 2008 remains a firm Subbacultcha! favourite, so it’s a pleasure to bring them back to Amsterdam as they show off songs from new album Public Strain. The Canadian art rockers are no strangers here, of course, and previously gave Deerhunter a run for their money in Paradiso. Lo-fi, dark and dry on the surface, shifts in percussion and harmony suddenly leap out whenever it’s least expected. Great! Idiot Glee provides lo-fi Beach Boys-inspired support.

FOREST FIRE + PLANTS & ANIMALS
Starts 21.00 | Cover 7 Euro

Ramshackle folk rock from a new Brooklyn band who sound like punks getting high around a campfire. Their Survival album was rated as one of Rough Trade’s albums of 2009 and earlier in spring they hit the road with Phosphorescent. Montreal’s Plants and Animals have already been around the block and offer a slightly more mature, but no less impressive, take on indie folk. Their new album La La Land is nominated for a Polaris award.

COLD PUMAS (UK) + THE FAIR OHS (UK) + THREAD PULLS (IRL)
Starts 20.00 | Cover 7 Euro

Brighton-based Cold Pumas play noisy new wave dance music. They use pulsating drum rhythms, super tight bass grooves, weaving one note guitar riffs and delay-drowning vocals. Fellow Brits the Fair Ohs specialise in tribal noise pop and punk, rarely letting energy levels dip. Then there’s Ireland’s Thread Pulls, a rough lo-fi duo burying guitar and melody under layers of noise and distorted drums.

Two fantastic intense movies for the price of one. Enter the Void (Soundtrack by Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk) is about a spirit who refuses to abandon the world of the living. It wanders through Tokyo while past, present and future merge in a hallucinatory maelstrom. Burning is a visually and musically overwhelming registration of 3 Mogwai concerts. The film is shot by the extremely talented, workaholic filming nomad Vincent Moon (Blogoteque)
Come down and experience four straight hours of sensual tripping.

If there is one show you have to attend this month it is this one. The band is not hyped, but amazing nonetheless. Future Islands have made the best album so far in 2010. It’s melancholic dance tunes; uplifting yet straight to the heart. On top of that the live shows can get pretty insane: a crazy singer, lots of sweat pouring and kids dancing furiously. Make sure you are there.
