Former Digable Planets member Ishmael Butler has always pushed against the limits of what hip-hop is, or could be, and together with bandmate and producer Tendai Maraire, recent album Lese Majesty finds him heading further into uncharted territory than even before. A retrofuturist manifesto that throws down the gauntlet to their peers, there’s a thrilling spontaneity to their music; conventional structures are ignored, and strange effects are sprinkled liberally throughout. The 18 songs are split into 7 suites, all with a science fiction/space theme, and while that might sound pretentious, it’s just Butler’s latest masterstroke as he continues to subvert norms.
