Like its glassy neighbour, Bimhuis is a hallowed ground for avant-garde sound. Alongside a string of experimental jazz series, the big black box on ‘t IJ also has a penchant for cutting-edge pop. For their September edition of Bimpop, they’ve invited a pair of unbridled folk-pop acts: Chicago guitarist Ryley Walker and haunting Belgian outfit Blackie & The Oohoos.
Attend event:
Having grown weary of the Chicago experimental noise scene he was involved with for years, singer-songwriter Ryley Walker decided to turn back the clock about 40 years and completely revamp his sound. His debut full-length, All Kinds of You, sounds like a perfectly preserved time capsule filled with accessible yet impressively ornate folk rock in the vein of Tim Buckley and Nick Drake. Led by raven-haired sisters Loesje and Martha Maieu, openers Blackie & the Oohoos, meanwhile, conjure up surreal nighttime rituals with their mystical folk pop.
