ATM’s Trans-Atlantic Mix

Self-described as “peripheral dance music”, the 1080p label stands at the vanguard of a burgeoning, primarily online scene. In the first half of 2014 alone, they’ve released no less than a dozen albums, with number 13 – Tlaotlon’s Ektomists – dropping today. Powered by essential digital/cassette releases by D. Tiffany, Beat Detectives, Magic Fades + Soul Ipsum and more, 1080p continues to make waves.

Though stylistically varied, each associated artist’s sound tends to be unified by a loosely defined conceptual framework of heady, lo-fi house/techno deconstructionism that exists somewhere between the club and bedroom. Straddling exactly that line was a showcase mix label head Richard MacFarlane sent us back in March. One of the standout tracks on that hourlong whirlwind was mysteriously titled cut, “3”, by ATM. Months later, ATM turn out to be a cross-continental collaboration between two of our favourite acts on the 1080p roster, Middlebrough analogue duo Perfume Advert and Brooklyn-based producer M/M.

The pairing were kind enough to hook us up with a predictably great new mix spanning artists as disparate as Bill Evans, Kassem Mosse and Inga Copeland, alongside characteristic hazy techno gems. As with their recently released album Xerox, the mix was pieced together via the miracle of mediated virtual online communications and, duh of duhs, it’s unreal. Included on it are USA network commercial samples, Duchamp, disembodied rap acapellas and Christina Aguilera, all smeared together in the best way possible. Get on this NOW.
