INCUBATE FESTIVAL - SEP 12-19 - Tilburg
Monday 06 September 2010 at 04:03 am
This year's Incubate Festival features Subbacultcha! favs like Dan Deacon, Neon Indian, Women, Eklin & Lucky Dragons. Steven McCarron had a good look at the line- up and put together a list of highlights
This annual celebration of indepedent culture has been an annual affair in Tilburg since 2005. It was previously known as ZXZW (Zuid bij Zuid West), but rebranded as Incubate last year, following some ‘friendly’ legal communications by the SXSW folks over in Texas. Fair enough, we say. For one thing, Incubate can easily stand alone as a haven for new and established talents. Musically anything goes. Hardcore, pop, electronic, free jazz, folk and noise rock sit side-by-side. Then there’s dashes of contemporary dance, film and visual arts.
Monotonos
Experimental ambient soundscapes from an Amsterdam musicians who uses no computer-generated sounds.
Zola Jesus
Darkwave electro pop for Converse-wearing kids rather than jaded old goths. Her music falls between Fever Ray, The XX and (at its weakest) Florence & The Machine.
The Ex
The Amsterdam art rockers doing their thing. Guitarist Andy Moor will also be performing separately with Greek classical composer Yannis Kyriakides.
Idiot Glee
Lo-fi Beach Boys-inspired pop music.
Space Siren
Space Siren consists of former members of Zoppo and Seesaw, two alternative Dutch bands that released great records on the Amsterdam-based label Transform Dreams back in the late '90s and early '00s. Imagine a similar kind of noise pop sound but just a little more aggressive.
The Chap
These experimental popsters from London have made a huge Subbacultcha! impression over the past few years, so we’re delighted that they finally have a new album out (<I>Well Done Europe<$>). And while their glitchy take on electronic and acoustic sounds is already enrapturing on record, just wait till you see them rip it all apart onstage. They’ll make you laugh, make you cry, and make you dance.
Women
Lo-fi and dark post punk from this incredibly understated Canadian bands. If you think we’re biased because we’re putting on their show in Amsterdam, you obviously missed their short sets in Paradiso last year. New album 'Public Strain' sees them restrain, refine and improve their sound in unexpected ways.
Lucky Dragons
Geek chic experimentalism from LA-based duo Luke Fischbeck and Sarah Rara. Easy listening has never been part of their plan. The project is more about transforming the acoustically normal into the aurally abnormal. It's quirky and they're not afraid to miss as well as hit. And as a reward for taking a journey with them, they'll occasionally even strike up a temporarily pretty groove.
DJ /rupture
Innovative New York DJ who can handle all sorts of beats, from drum & bass and dubstep through to bleepy classical minimalism.
Horse Feathers
Rootsy indie folk from this acoustic Portland quartet.
Mordant Music
Everything from grime, industrial, electro and pop through to unexpected electronic folk experiments..
Dan Deacon
Mmm... Dan D’s show at Paradiso last year still sticks out as one of the most memorable live sets of the year. Geeky lo-fi rave pop plus a crazy audience plus his crowd control antics makes for insanity in the best possible way.
Eklin
Eklin have played many a Subbacultcha! night and hopefully they'll play many more, as they're truly one of the most unique bands in the country. They combine noise, soundscapes and (pop) melodies to perfection, and we're eagerly awaiting their debut album.
Cold Pumas
Noisy new wave dance tunes from this extremely exciting new Brit band.
Fair Ohs
Tribal noise pop and punk that rarely lets energy levels dip.
Imaad Wasif
Canadian guitarist who played in Alaska and The New Folk Implosion before moving onto the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. But he’s also a solo artist in his own right, mucking about with guitar-heavy psychedelic rock and pop.
Part Chimp
Brain splattering noise punk from these angry Londoners who’re given freedom to scare and desecrate by Rock Action Records.
Plants & Animals
Montreal’s Plants and Animals offer a slightly more mature take on indie folk, with their new album 'La La Land' already nominated for a Polaris award.
Black Mountain
Vancouver's riff-heavy psych rockers spent the summer on the road previewing material from their new album 'Wilderness Heart'. The album will finally be released during the week of this fest.
